Raven-Symoné revealed that she once broke up with her now-wife, Miranda Maday, because of concerns about their interracial relationship.
What did Raven and her wife say about their relationship?
The veteran actor and her wife, who tied the knot in 2020, appeared on the Dec. 1 episode of the Wide Open With Ashlyn Harris podcast, during which they opened up about the difficulties they faced in the early days of their relationship.
During the show, Raven and Maday discussed the struggles in their relationship and how they had to adjust habits from past romances. When they got married, Maday revealed that Raven had told her that how the public would perceive it “might be difficult.”
“One of the reasons that she broke up with me was because she wasn’t ready to be with a white person,” Maday said on the podcast, noting that she had no idea Raven was navigating those feelings.
“There’s nothing I can do about my whiteness. I could have […] supported her better,” she added.
‘It’s kind of a shame’
Maday said some of the reasons people dislike her include her appearance and her interracial marriage with Raven. She added that people have accused her of being the actor’s “handler,” “white-washing” her, being a “gold digger,” not letting Raven speak or talking too much, among other things.
“I mean, the s**t that I see and hear is overwhelming. And it’s kind of a shame because the truth of what’s happening is we’re a couple that’s trying to like grow, thrive, create content that people may resonate with, might be entertained by,” Maday explained.
“I’m also trying to — yeah, of course — step into my own strengths, find my voice more clearly in my work field. There are personal goals and growth that I’m also trying to achieve that everyone is entitled to. So, I’ve tried to honestly let all of it go, Ashlyn, because the noise shouldn’t impact me one way or another, whether it’s positive or negative.”
Why did Maday receive death threats?
Raven jumped back into the conversation, saying that she has “been through so much s**t,” and that she learned to delete the app and not respond to the hateful messages people were saying about them. However, she felt compelled to speak out after Maday received death threats based on an interview they had on the Bottoms Up with Fannita podcast in 2024.
The main reason why Maday received death threats was that she said that she had never watched That’s So Raven, one of the now 39-year-old’s most notable projects with Disney, Blavity reported.
“I never have once said that I did not know who Raven was. I only have ever said that I did not grow up watching That’s So Raven,” Maday explained at the time. “I did not watch her as a child. But since getting married and meeting her in 2015, I have seen the majority of her work.”
After that, Raven set the record straight on those sending her wife death threats: “I’m here with Miranda, my wife, to tell you to stop it in the comments and stop with the death threats in her DMs,” Raven said in a nearly two-minute TikTok clip, per ET. “It is disrespectful to her and in turn disrespectful to me. Stop it.”
