It’s confirmed to be all in the family in the Season 1 finale of HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry.
The final episode of the season does confirm that Marge (Matilda Lawler) is the mother of Richie Tozier, played by Finn Wolfhard in the films.
As we previously reported, fans had heavily speculated that this was the case — mostly because of Richie’s name (potentially being named after Arian S. Cartaya’s Rich Santos), but also because they both look alike and, as written in King’s book, Richie’s mom is named “Maggie.” Both “Marge” and “Maggie” are nicknames for “Margaret,” which is Marge’s real name.
Pennywise himself confirms Marge is Richie’s mother
In a wild turn of events, Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård) reveals that Marge is Richie’s mother when he shows her a missing person sign of Richie, with a photo of Wolfhard’s version of the character from the films. Pennywise says, “Oh, I’ve always wondered how you’d taste, Margaret Tozier.”
When Marge says, “Tozier?” Pennywise says, “Oh, but not yet? Not Tozier yet. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes Richie in the baby carriage. Unless… unless he dies with you?”
With Marge confused, Pennywise holds up the missing person sign and says, “Your son. Don’t you recognize your little boy? The seed of your stinking loins and his filthy friends bring me my death,” which means Pennywise knows that his demise will be a result of the Losers Club down the line.
But, as the character says, he’s not sure of the timeline. “Or is it birth? I get confused. Tomorrow? Yesterday? It’s all the same for little Pennywise. But it’s not always easy. Being caged up in one place, one time. They can’t fence me in. Not them. And not you.”
What Pennywise tells Marge actually sets up season 2 of the show
After they’ve put Pennywise to rest for the next cycle, Marge reveals to Lilly that Pennywise talked to her when they were alone in the fog, and that he said she was going to have a son — and that he and his friends would kill him in the future.
Marge says this is why Pennywise wanted to kill her, because the past, present and future were all the same, and that his death was actually his birth.
Lilly (Clara Stack) says Pennywise was probably just saying that to scare her, but Marge poses the question: What if he does see time differently and he can go backward?
“I know it sounds crazy, but what if he tries to go back and kill someone from the time before we were born, like our parents?”
Lilly responds and says, “I guess it’ll be someone else’s fight.”
This strongly hints that season 2 of the show, which is already poised to take place during Pennywise’s prior cycle — 27 years earlier. Based on the creatives’ three-season plan, season 3 would take place during the 1908 cycle.
Season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry is now streaming on HBO Max.
